Salmon Special Instructions

All of my templates have a few requirements in order to work properly. Please take a look at this page in addition to following the directions below: General Template Install Instructions.

Salmon, by default, comes with a couple of extra template files: a "Contact Me" page and a "Comment RSS" feed for individual posts. Unfortunately, I couldn't have these automagically install with the rest of the templates, so a little manual work will be required on your end. I promise it isn't all that hard, so no worries!

To install the contact form, just follow these steps after you get Salmon installed to your weblog:

  1. Make sure you uploaded the "salmon" folder that is located within the "tpl" folder inside your download
  2. Login to your control panel and head over to the "Templates" tab
  3. Select the group that you previously installed Salmon into and click on "New Template"
  4. On the "New Template Form" page, enter "contact" for the name of the template
  5. Immediately below the name field, choose Web Page (if it isn't already selected) for the "Template Type"
  6. Inside the "Default Template Data" section select "Use a template from your library"
  7. Once that is selected, use the dropdown to the immediate right of the radio button and choose "salmon/contact"
  8. Click "Submit" and your template is automagically created from that file

To install the comment RSS template, follow these steps once you have Salmon installed:

  1. Repeat steps one through three from the above instructions
  2. On the "New Template Form" page, enter "comment_rss" for the name of the template
  3. Immediately below the name field, choose RSS Page for the "Template Type"
  4. Inside the "Default Template Data" section select "Use a template from your library"
  5. Once that is selected, use the dropdown to the immediate right of the radio button and choose "salmon/comment_rss"
  6. Click "Submit" and your template is automagically created from that file

That's all there is to it!

One last note. The flickr images located in the sidebar area of the theme are being pulled using Javascript. Since I don't have a flickr account, I really can't offer help on getting the proper badge code to display your own photos. I would strongly suggest downloading the Flickr Tools plugin provided by Solspace. Grab the plugin from there and enter a group ID (unfortunately it doesn't work for individual user IDs just yet) in order to show your own images. Alternately, you can change the code to pull images from your own EE based gallery. If you need help in doing that, feel free to ask!

Be sure to check out the code for the templates. There are comments within those files which contain important information!

Caveat (I love that word)

The footer section of this template is set to display the last 5 posts, offset by two (since there are 2 posts displayed on the main page), in the left column. The middle column displays the last 5 entries to receive a comment, as well as the author of that comment. The right column is a static list of 5 links. The links will never line up properly due to them not having any secondary information, such as a click count or real tiny description. To get around this, you could either add a small description beneath each link (following the example of the Recent Articles and Recent Comments) or use a very nice module that silenz has created called Ajax Linktracker. With either of those things done, the 5 Articles, 5 Comments and 5 links should line up just right.

Late Edit

Fair warning, everyone: This theme is completely untested in Safari (I'm sorry! I completely forgot about that browser). After taking a quick look at it in Safari today, I can see that the search button doesn't line up perfectly, and the "advanced search" text spills out of the image a bit. The problem exists in Internet Explorer (PC) as well, though not as bad. Once time frees up a little bit, I'll look into fixing it. If someone else wants to tackle it please feel free to do so and by all means, send me your fixes so I can include them in a future update. Sorry for these problems, everyone!

Should you need any help installing the themes, please feel free and contact me. I'll do my best to answer you in a prompt fashion, but with school back in session I do ask for at least a 24 hour grace period.
